When it’s your first time solo travelling in a city filled with over 9 million people and countless places to discover, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the endless choices available. You can feel reluctant to venture out too far to explore new areas, especially on your own. I definitely felt this way at times during my first few months settling into my new home, and it may be how some of you may feel when planning your trip to London.

The experience of actually being in London is often different to what you see online while planning and researching. You may end up looking at other people’s experiences in London while planning your own trip, and with so much great advice and recommendations out there… there can almost be too much advice that it becomes conflicting and confusing.

I’ve done my fair share of searching online for things to do and places to discover in London, but I also wanted to ask somebody some questions about the city that only a Londoner could answer, like:

  • Is London safe?

  • When does London have the best weather?

  • Do places have air conditioning?

  • How do I pay for the tube and the bus?

And the list goes on, and on, and on.

I ended up finding the answers to these questions through living in and experiencing the city. The more I did, the more I discovered the joy of finding new places myself instead of saving them to my phone from findings on social media, and I think the one thing I did that helped me get acquainted with London the most was walking.

London is a beautiful city to walk in. Besides the ranging architectural styles and historic landmarks spread across the city, almost 50% of London is green space, and it offers a series of canals, reservoirs, and parks to meander through.

If I can spare the time and the weather’s on my side, I’ll always try to walk to my destination. If I don’t have a planned route, I’ll purposely wander around a neighbourhood and try out some new places. With my collection of oddly specific playlists, podcasts, books, or a camera accompanying me, I’ve found some wonderful little spots while wandering my way through the city.

In my London Guide, I’ll share a few of my favourite walks in the city so grab some comfy (and slip resistant) shoes, put on some jams, and happy walking!
